Curio about Brigadeiro candy from Brazil

History

The Brigadeiro is a traditional Brazilian dessert, popular confection throughout the country, especially for festive events. The origin of the dessert is uncertain. They usually say it was invented by Brazilian women in the 1954 elections. Which women? For those who supported – the then candidate for the Presidency of the Republic by the National Democratic Union (UDN) party – Eduardo Gomes (1896 -1981) who, at the time, held the rank of Brigadier. One of woman was Heloisa Nabuco de Oliveira, a confectioner from Rio de Janeiro. She helped to promote the presidential candidacy of Eduardo Gomes.

Women made sweets and more sweets in their kitchens and – later – instead of handing out little saints and/or paper folders, they distributed sweets. Some records of similar sweets were found in years prior to the campaigns disputed by Eduardo Gomes, the Brigadier.

Brigadier Eduardo Gomes lost the elections that ran for the Presidency of the Republic (1945 and 1950).

The BRIGADEIRO candy won all the attention and remains elected among the most delicious riches of Brazilian cuisine.

When do people eat it? Where is it made?

Brigadeiro is commonly made at home in Brazil, also found in bakeries and snack shops. It is generally shaped into small balls covered in chocolate sprinkles (regular one) and placed in a small cupcake liner.

It can be found in different countries as a result of Brazilian migration.

Brigadeiro Gourmet, the trend of the recipe

In recent years, flavor and coating variations on the traditional chocolate Brigadeiro have become popular. This variation of flavors and easy manipulation of the original dessert lead into a trend of different recipes, such as cakes, tarts, ice cream or even bread. For Brigadeiro, in Brazil they named it Brigadeiro Gourmet.  Besides the variations of the flavors, confectioners created new options for toppings, decorations, candy prints and colors to brighten up children's parties.
